HIGHLIGHTS:

THIMPU:
Capital city of Kingdom of Bhutan, 70km from Punaka, 65km from Paro. Although the Thimpu valley has supported small settlements for many centuries and a dzong has existed there since 1216, the city didn't really develop until the king declared Thimphu the new capital in 1961. Vehicles first appeared on the streets a year later, and slowly the city began to fit the role as the nation's capital. Currently the town is under going massive development.

The winter season is very cold in Thimphu, with temperatures often dipping as low as -10°C, while the summers are wet and humid. Therefore, the best times to visit are September, October and from March to May.

PARO:
Situated at an average elevation of 8,500 feet high from sea level, home to many of Bhutan's oldest temples and monasteries. Paro valley has managed to keep its bucolic nature in spite of the Bhutan's only airport and many development activities.

TRASHIGANG:
It is in an administrative town in the east of Bhutan. The traditional architecture and narrow streets give the town a quaint and snug feel, not unlike an Italian or Cornish fishing village

PUNAKA:
Altitude : 1,300 m/4,430 feet
Located at an altitude of 4430 feet above sea level, Punakha had once served as the winter capital of Bhutan. It is still being used as the winter home to Bhutan's spiritual leader and the monks of Thimphu and Paro. Blessed with temperate climate and fed by Pho Chu (Male) and Mochu (female) rivers, it is the most fertile valley and best red rice grower in the country. During a clear weather there are splendid view of the distant Himalayan snowcapped peaks at Dochula Pass on Thimphu - Punakha road. Takes about two and half hours to reach from Thimphu.

PHUNTSHSOLING:
Phuntsholing is a frontier and commercial centre on the northern edge of the Indian plains and south of Thimphu. It takes about six hours by drive to reach Phuntsholing from Paro and Thimphu. Situated at the foothills of Himalayas, it serves as a convenient entry/exit points and the main trading zone for Bhutanese with other neighboring countries of South Asia.

BUMTHANG:
Altitude: 2,600 m / 8,530 feet, 500 m/ 13,125 feet)
It is about two and half hours drive from Trongsa to Bumthang. Located at an altitude of 8530 - 13125 feet above sea level, Bumthang is the general name given to a complex of four valleys- Chumey, Choekhor, Tang and Ura. Choekhor and Chumey are agricultural valleys while Tang and Ura depend mostly on the animal husbandry. Bumthang is considered the holiest valley in Bhutan. Many Bhutanese from all over the country visit here on pilgrim to pay their respect and to be blessed by the many holy sites where various religious masters have meditated.
