Chobhar Cycling Tour Overview
The Bicycling to Chobhar tour is a full-day mountain biking experience through the southern side of Kathmandu Valley. The ride begins in Kathmandu and quickly reaches Chobhar, where the Bagmati River cuts through the historic Chobhar Gorge. Nearby Jal Binayak Temple provides an important cultural stop before the route continues through Chobhar village and into quieter countryside.
Beyond Chobhar, paved roads gradually change into rougher tracks as the route approaches the lower slopes of Champadevi. The climb becomes steeper, with dirt, loose stones, forest sections, and uneven surfaces adding to the challenge. The complete Champadevi summit area reaches around 2,278m, although the highest point reached by bicycle depends on trail conditions and the ability of the group.
The Chobhar cycling tour is moderate to challenging and is best suited to riders who are already comfortable using a geared mountain bike. Previous experience with uphill riding, braking on loose surfaces, and controlling a bicycle downhill is recommended. A longer circuit can continue towards Pharping and the Dakshinkali side, while recreational riders can follow a shorter return according to fitness, weather, and available daylight.
Spring from March to May and autumn from September to November generally provide the best conditions for mountain biking around Chobhar and Champadevi. Winter is also suitable, while monsoon can make dirt and forest trails muddy or slippery. No TIMS Card, conservation permit, or restricted-area trekking permit is normally required. Applicable cultural entrance and bicycle-related arrangements for the confirmed route are coordinated in advance.
