Kirtipur Cycling Tour Overview

The Bicycling Tour to Kirtipur is an easy cultural cycling experience through the southern side of Kathmandu Valley. Unlike more technical mountain biking routes around Nagarjun or Champadevi, this journey focuses on local culture, traditional architecture, farmland, and historic neighborhoods while still providing an enjoyable cycling workout.

Kirtipur lies on an elevated ridge approximately 8 km southwest of Kathmandu. The final approach includes a short climb before entering narrow streets lined with traditional red-brick houses, tiled roofs, temples, shrines, and old courtyards. The slower pace inside the historic center gives riders enough time to appreciate the town rather than simply cycling through it.

Major cultural stops include Bagh Bhairab Temple and the higher area around Uma Maheshwar Temple. The route can also continue towards Panga, where residential neighborhoods and agricultural surroundings provide a closer look at everyday Newari life. The complete ride generally covers around 16 to 20 km depending on your hotel and return route.

Spring from March to May and autumn from September to November generally provide the best cycling conditions, while winter is also suitable. Monsoon rain can make stone lanes and agricultural tracks slippery. No TIMS Card, national park permit, conservation permit, or restricted-area permit is required, although applicable entrance fees at selected cultural sites may apply.

Your cycling tour begins after breakfast with a bike and helmet check before riding towards the southwestern side of Kathmandu Valley. As the city becomes quieter, the route passes residential areas, farmland, and more open countryside.

A short but steady climb leads to Kirtipur, where you explore narrow stone-paved lanes, traditional red-brick houses, courtyards, shrines, and historic temples. Visit Bagh Bhairab Temple and continue towards the Uma Maheshwar area for broad views across Kathmandu Valley.

The ride then continues towards Panga through residential neighborhoods and agricultural surroundings, offering a closer look at everyday Newari life. Stop for lunch and a short rest before beginning the return journey.

Much of the return is easier as the route descends from the Kirtipur ridge. Follow the guide back towards Kathmandu and finish at your hotel or agreed drop-off point.
