Overview of the City of Temples Tour

Kathmandu is frequently called the City of Temples, but the name makes much more sense once you begin walking through its older neighborhoods.

A shrine can sit between two shops. A centuries-old Buddhist courtyard can appear behind a narrow entrance. A Hindu temple may share the same neighborhood with a Buddhist stupa. Prayer wheels, bells, carved wooden windows, stone water spouts, palace courtyards, monasteries, cremation ghats, and neighborhood deities remain part of everyday life.

The City of Temples Tour 5 Days is designed to explore this cultural landscape properly rather than treating Kathmandu as a quick stop before a Himalayan trek.

The journey covers Kathmandu, Lalitpur or Patan, Bhaktapur, and Dhulikhel. Over five days, you visit six of the seven monument zones that together form the UNESCO Kathmandu Valley World Heritage property.

These are Kathmandu Durbar Square, Patan Durbar Square, Bhaktapur Durbar Square, Swayambhunath, Boudhanath, and Pashupatinath.

The seventh UNESCO monument zone, Changu Narayan, is not part of Basanta Adventure's original five-day itinerary and is therefore not artificially added to this package.

The trip begins in Kathmandu at approximately 1,350 m.

After arrival and a relaxed first evening, the cultural journey starts with Bhaktapur, approximately 12 km east of Kathmandu.

Bhaktapur sits at around 1,401 m and is one of the best places in Kathmandu Valley to experience the physical form of an old Newari city.

The historic center is compact enough to explore on foot.

Brick-paved lanes connect palace squares, temple courtyards, traditional homes, pottery areas, local shops, resting platforms, water spouts, and neighborhood shrines.

Bhaktapur Durbar Square forms the monumental center of the old city.

Among its best-known landmarks are the former royal palace, the 55-Window Palace, the Golden Gate, and the surrounding temples and courtyards.

The tour also reaches Taumadhi Square, where the five-storey Nyatapola Temple rises above the surrounding buildings.

Rather than rushing through Bhaktapur for photographs, the itinerary allows a half-day visit before continuing farther east.

From Bhaktapur, the road follows the Arniko Highway toward Dhulikhel.

Dhulikhel lies approximately 30 km southeast of Kathmandu at 1,550 m / 5,085 ft. From Bhaktapur, the remaining drive is roughly 18 to 20 km and normally takes around 45 minutes to one hour, depending on traffic.

The town was historically connected with the trade route between Kathmandu Valley and Tibet.

Its location on the eastern rim of the valley also makes it a popular mountain viewpoint.

Dhulikhel's appeal is different from that of Kathmandu.

The traffic becomes lighter, buildings become less dense, and the horizon opens toward the Himalayan foothills.

On a clear evening, sunset light can reach the snow-covered ranges north of the town.

The following morning offers another opportunity for mountain views.

Dhulikhel Municipality describes a wide panorama extending from the Langtang area toward the Everest side of the Himalaya on exceptionally clear days.

In practical terms, the most recognizable views often include sections of Langtang, Ganesh Himal, Gaurishankar, and surrounding ranges. Very distant peaks depend heavily on atmospheric clarity.

This is why the itinerary treats the mountain panorama as a weather-dependent experience rather than guaranteeing a particular peak.

After sunrise and breakfast, we return toward Kathmandu.

The afternoon introduces two of Nepal's most important religious sites: Boudhanath and Pashupatinath.
