Namo Buddha Hike
The one-day Namo Buddha Hike is a peaceful countryside walk from Dhulikhel to one of Nepal’s most important Buddhist pilgrimage sites. The route passes terraced farmland, traditional villages, forested hills, and rural trails before reaching Namo Buddha at around 1,750m. With roughly three to four hours of walking, it combines gentle adventure, Himalayan scenery, village life, and meaningful Buddhist heritage near Kathmandu.
Namo Buddha Hike Overview
The Namo Buddha Hike from Kathmandu is an excellent choice for travelers looking for a short walk that combines nature, rural life, and Buddhist heritage. The journey begins with a drive east to Dhulikhel, followed by a countryside trail through terraced farmland, local settlements, gentle hills, and patches of forest towards Namo Buddha.
The Dhulikhel to Namo Buddha hiking route covers approximately 10 km and generally takes around three to four hours. The trail includes gentle climbs, descents, farm tracks, village roads, and occasional stone paths, but no technical sections. With a maximum elevation of around 1,750m, the hike is easy to moderate and suitable for travelers with basic walking fitness.
Namo Buddha gives the walk its strong spiritual character. Buddhist tradition connects the site with a compassionate prince, regarded as a previous incarnation of the Buddha, who sacrificed himself to save a starving tigress and her cubs. After visiting the sacred stupa, the journey continues to Thrangu Tashi Yangtse Monastery, where monks continue Buddhist study, prayer, and religious practice.
Spring from March to May and autumn from September to November generally offer the most comfortable hiking conditions. Winter can also provide excellent Himalayan visibility, while monsoon brings greener countryside but wetter trails. The standard Namo Buddha day hike does not enter a restricted area or major trekking conservation zone, so no special trekking permit is normally required.
