Heli Tour of Everest

The Everest Helicopter Tour is a spectacular four to five-hour aerial journey from Kathmandu into the heart of the Khumbu. Flying past Lukla, Namche Bazaar, glaciers, Sherpa settlements, and the upper Everest region, the tour offers close views of Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Ama Dablam, and surrounding peaks. It is ideal for travelers seeking an Everest experience without a multi-day high-altitude trek.

Everest Helicopter Tour Overview

The Everest Helicopter Tour from Kathmandu is one of the quickest ways to experience the scale of the Khumbu Himalayas. Instead of trekking for several days from Lukla to Everest Base Camp, the helicopter carries you from Kathmandu across Nepal’s middle hills and directly into the Everest region. The landscape changes rapidly from green valleys and terraced farmland to deep mountain gorges, glaciers, snowfields, and towering Himalayan peaks.

The flight normally passes through or around Lukla before continuing towards Namche Bazaar and the upper Khumbu. Depending on the approved route and weather conditions, the journey may include aerial views towards the Gokyo region before approaching Gorakshep, Kala Patthar, Everest Base Camp, and the Khumbu Glacier. Mount Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Pumori, and Ama Dablam dominate the higher sections of the flight.

High-altitude landings are never treated as unconditional stops. The exact route, landing locations, passenger load, weather, visibility, aircraft performance, park permissions, and aviation regulations determine what is possible on the day. When an authorized landing is included, the stop remains brief because passengers reach elevations above 5,000m without gradual acclimatization. A breakfast stop at a mountain lodge may also form part of the confirmed flight program.

Spring from March to May and autumn from October to November generally provide the best conditions for an Everest Base Camp Helicopter Tour, with clearer mornings and good Himalayan visibility. Winter flights are also possible when weather permits, while monsoon conditions are less predictable. Applicable Sagarmatha National Park entry requirements and helicopter permissions must be arranged for the confirmed route. A TIMS Card is not normally required for a helicopter-only sightseeing tour.

Experience the Heli Tour of Everest with Basanta Adventure

Travel Deeper. Experience More. Journey with Purpose.

The Heli Tour of Everest offers a fast and immersive way to experience the Khumbu, taking you from Kathmandu past famous Sherpa settlements, Himalayan valleys, glaciers, and some of the world’s highest mountains within a single morning.

Basanta Adventure has been organizing Himalayan journeys since 1998. Our decades of experience leading treks through the Annapurna region, Everest region, and other mountain destinations have developed a strong understanding of weather, altitude, transportation, route changes, and the logistics required to operate safely in Nepal’s mountain environment.

Helicopter tours depend heavily on smooth coordination. Hotel transfers, passenger information, flight schedules, weather updates, permits, helicopter operations, refuelling arrangements, landing permissions, and return transfers all need to work together. Our Kathmandu operations team coordinates these details with the helicopter operator and keeps guests informed if mountain conditions affect the original plan.

Basanta Adventure is ISO 9001:2015 certified and follows responsible and sustainable tourism policies throughout its Himalayan operations. Sagarmatha National Park is a sensitive protected environment and home to long-established Sherpa communities, so our helicopter arrangements follow applicable park and aviation regulations rather than promising landings or routes that conditions do not allow.

Our experience also extends beyond Nepal through decades of Tibet tours and expedition operations. This long-standing expertise in high-altitude travel, permits, remote logistics, and changing Himalayan conditions supports the same careful planning we apply to an Everest Helicopter Tour from Kathmandu

Itinerary
Day 1

Everest Helicopter Tour from Kathmandu to the Khumbu and Back, Tour Duration: Approximately 4 to 5 Hours,

+

Your Heli Tour of Everest begins early in the morning when a Basanta Adventure representative meets you at your Kathmandu hotel. Morning departures are generally preferred because mountain visibility and wind conditions are often more favorable earlier in the day.

You will then be transferred to Tribhuvan International Airport according to the confirmed helicopter schedule. After completing passenger and security procedures, you meet the helicopter crew and receive a short safety briefing covering boarding, seatbelts, personal belongings, and safe movement around the aircraft.

Once clearance is received, the helicopter takes off from Kathmandu and flies east across Nepal’s middle hills. Terraced farmland, green ridges, winding rivers, roads, and rural settlements spread out below as the city gradually disappears behind you.

As the flight approaches Solukhumbu, the terrain becomes increasingly rugged. Snow-covered Himalayan peaks begin appearing above the surrounding ridges, marking the transition from Nepal’s middle hills into the Everest region.

The helicopter approaches Lukla at approximately 2,860m, the main aviation gateway for travelers heading towards Everest Base Camp. Depending on the aircraft, fuel requirements, passenger load, weather, and the day’s flight plan, a short operational or refuelling stop may be required.

Leaving Lukla, the helicopter follows the direction of the Dudh Koshi Valley deeper into the Khumbu. From above, you can see forested mountain slopes, suspension bridges, trekking trails, river valleys, and Sherpa settlements that trekkers normally take several days to reach on foot.

Namche Bazaar soon appears at approximately 3,440m. Built into a steep mountainside, Namche is the main trading and trekking center of the Khumbu and one of the most recognizable settlements along the Everest Base Camp route.

As the helicopter climbs higher, forests gradually give way to alpine valleys, rocky ridges, glaciers, and snow-covered terrain. Depending on the approved route and weather conditions, the journey may also include views towards the Gokyo Valley and its high-altitude lakes.

The most dramatic section begins as you approach the upper Everest region. Mount Everest, Lhotse, Nuptse, Pumori, Ama Dablam, and surrounding Himalayan summits dominate the skyline while glaciers, moraine, and rugged mountain valleys stretch below.

Kala Patthar rises to approximately 5,545m and is one of the best-known viewpoints for Mount Everest. The helicopter may fly around this area as part of the approved sightseeing route. Any landing in the upper Khumbu remains dependent on aviation regulations, park permissions, weather, aircraft performance, passenger weight, and the pilot’s final safety assessment.

If an authorized high-altitude landing is included in the confirmed program, passengers should move slowly and follow all crew instructions. Because the helicopter reaches elevations above 5,000m within a short period without gradual acclimatization, ground time must remain carefully controlled.

The flight may also provide aerial views over or near Everest Base Camp at approximately 5,364m and the vast Khumbu Glacier. During the spring climbing season, expedition tents may be visible, while outside the main climbing period the area appears much quieter.

From above, the Khumbu Icefall reveals a dramatic maze of broken ice, crevasses, glacier formations, and moraine beneath Everest and Lhotse. The aerial perspective provides a clear sense of the enormous scale and complexity of the upper Khumbu landscape.

After completing the main Everest sightseeing section, the helicopter begins descending towards the lower Khumbu. Depending on the confirmed flight plan, the route may pass around areas such as Pheriche, Tengboche, or the ridges above Namche.

When included in the confirmed package, the helicopter may stop at a mountain lodge for breakfast or refreshments. This provides time to enjoy the Himalayan surroundings from the ground before continuing the journey back towards Kathmandu.

The return flight generally travels through Lukla, where another brief operational or refuelling stop may be required. From here, the helicopter leaves the high Himalayas and flies west across Nepal’s hills and valleys towards Kathmandu.

After landing at Tribhuvan International Airport, a Basanta Adventure representative will meet you and transfer you back to your hotel. The complete Everest Helicopter Tour normally takes approximately four to five hours, although weather, air traffic, refuelling, route changes, and landing arrangements can affect the final duration.

Within a single morning, the tour takes you from Kathmandu into the heart of the Khumbu, past famous Sherpa settlements and Himalayan valleys, towards Everest Base Camp and the Khumbu Glacier, with close aerial views of Mount Everest and surrounding peaks.
